I've often heard people complain that in books the love interest is too perfect. Personally, I don't complain when that happens. I just fall in love and then have to add another name to my list of fictional boyfriends. And when I'm writing I think that's a lot of the fun--to create a guy I can absolutely fall in love with.
Ryan Miller, (the love interest in Being Jamie Baker) is definitely my fictional boyfriend. But he's a little different though. He's kind of my fictional boyfriend as well as my real-life boyfriend because he has a lot of the same traits as my husband. For instance Josh never gets angry and he's impossibly optimistic. (This meshes quite nicely with my pessimism, but I can find it every bit as annoying as Jamie does sometimes.)
I won't bore you with the entire list of traits I stole from Josh to create Ryan Miller, but I will let you in on a secret about the book's dedication. The dedication reads: For Joshua, the original Ryan Miller This sounds incredibly sweet and sappy and I did do that on purpose because I do love him more than life itself. But the truth is, he earned the title of Ryan Miller mostly because of his ego. *snicker* If my husband and Ryan ever met in real life they would spend the entire time telling each other how awesome they are. (My friend Summer can attest to this!)
There's a line from a Justin Timberlake song that says, "Is it really cocky if you know that it's true?" I think that sums up both Josh and Ryan's way of thinking quite nicely. In fact, my husband refers to the project he's currently been working on as "Einstein's Baby" because he says that if Albert Einstein and Alfred Hitchcock ever had a love child it would be this project he's working on--that's how awesome it is... Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this about my husband. He's cocky, and yet he's still very humble in a lot of ways which makes the ego completely endearing.
So Ryan Miller = easy going, optimistic, happy, & slightly egotistical = my husband = my fictional boyfriend.
While I'm completely faithful to my Husband, I cannot claim the same for my fictional boyfriend Ryan. (Sorry Ryan, perfect guys may be hard to find in real life, but in the fictional world, I'm afraid You're a dime a dozen.) Which is why I have dozens of fictional boyfriends. I'll just list my top ten though. I should say current top ten since I'm completely fickle about my favorite anythings...
My Top 10 Fictional Boyfriends (Other than Ryan Miller)
1. Fitzwilliam Darcy from Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice
2. Ian O'Shea from Stephenie Meyer's the Host.
3. Jace Wayland from Cassandra Claire's Immortal Instruments series
4. Edward Cullen from Stepheine Meyer's Twilight series. (Let me be clear that I mean Edward from the books and most definitely NOT the movies--which, if you ask me are two completely different characters. However, since I've vowed to try my best not to spend my life ranting about how much I hate those movies, I'll stop there. Oh, except that also when I say Edward Cullen do I in no way mean Robert Pattinson!)
5. Rob Wilkins from Meg Cabot's 1-800-Where-Are-You series
6. Caleb Becker from Simone Elkeles's Leaving Paradise (Which reminds me--I NEED to read Return to Paradise!)
7. Theodore "Laurie" Laurence from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women
8. Cinna (What is his last name? Anyone?) from Suzanne Collin's Hunger Games Series
9. Ash (The Winter Prince, does he even have a last name?) from Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series
10. Gilbert Blithe from L.M. Montgomery's Anne Of Green Gables
So, now that I've shared my top 10 it begs the question, Who are your fictional boyfriends? Come on people, lets hear 'em!

I wish I could say I have 10, but unfortunately I haven't read THAT many books. Yet. But my three favorite are:
ReplyDelete1) John After from Jennifer Echols' Going Too Far. Man in uniform, deep, and caring. Oh, dear. Swoon.
2) Hale from Ally Carter's Heist Society. For purely shallow reasons: hooray for handsome jet-setting Mr. Moneybags.
3) Spencer from Maureen Johnson's Suite Scarlett. He's funny, whimsical, sweet and loves his sisters.
Quick question before I make my list, Kelly: I thought Darcy's first name was Fitzwilliam, not Mark???
ReplyDelete1) Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice -- need I say more?
2) Ryan Miller from Being Jamie Baker (And no, I'm not just saying that, I absolutely adored Ryan)
3) Gale from The Hunger Games
4) Ben from Walk Two Moons -- probably my first literary crush, although I don't think I realized it at the time.
5) Rudy from the Book Thief. I thought he was a total jerk at first, but I loved him by the end of the book.
6) The Count from The Count of Monte Cristo. He's not the most romantic of men, but he's brilliant and there's just something about him...
7) Sir Percy from The Scarlet Pimpernel. He's ridiculously romantic, and who can resist a hero?
8) Numair from Tamora Pierce's Immortals series
9) Neal from Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small series
10) Rosto from Tamora Pierce's Beka Cooper series (I guess Tamora Pierce is good at creating male characters I like...)
haha Taylor, you are so right. I always do that. It's because he's Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones's Diary. (Whom I also LOVE.) But Yes, he is Fitzwilliam in P&P. I'm a dope. And going to go fix it right now. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read/seen Bridget Jones, or else I might've caught that. No biggie, I was just REALLY confused for a while. ;)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have 10 to list D:
ReplyDelete1. Luke Brandon from Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series
2. Ivan from Cecelia Ahern's If You Could See Me Now
3. Damon from L.J. Smith's Vampire Diaries seris
4. Puck from Glee (hehe)
I'm gonna have to put some careful thought into this, and I'll come back with my list. I don't want to miss any drool worthy candidates. LOL
ReplyDeleteOh, and I love your ringtone! I'm still a huge BSB fan. I can't wait until they start doing reunion tours!
Great list. Thanks for sharing. Your husband sounds like a real winner.
I have to say that I agree with your top fictional boyfriends. Mr Darcy has got to be the all time favourite. However, I would add Professor Friedrich from Little Women (although, admittedly I am a tad influenced by Gabriel Byrne who played him in one of the movies!!)
ReplyDeleteEdward Cullen, certainly, although I must say that I rather liked Carlisle Cullen too!
I can't think of any others - I think you've pretty much got it.
So that is fun! Are you a team Edward then? Do you think Bella ended up with the right person? I have had this "discussion" with lots of people, and even my hubby disagrees with me, but I think Edward is Bella's true love and therefore, the right guy for her. Vampire or not. Oh and for the record, I like Robert P . . . don't hate me! LOL
